| Valance on, quarters repaired, front end started on | |
|
Work has been plodding on over the last few months. The valance is now on.
It took a lot of fiddling to get it sitting in the right place but eventually it was close enough and welded on. Its not pretty at the moment but its solid and some filler at some point will sort out the ripples. Moving forward a little the quarter panels were next. As a reminder this is what they looked like.
So I chopped away with the grinder until sound metal was found leaving a hole like this.
Luckily I made a card template of the curve of the panel so a repair section could be made up and tacked in. I didn't fancy my panel beating skills too much so made it in two parts with the lip made from a thin strip.
On the other side a similar approach was followed.
Then it was all welded up fully and primed. To avoid distorting the rest of the quarter panel I welded in many short bursts letting it cool down in between, seems to have worked!
Inside a fair chunk of the arch was cut out. A few repair panels were used to plug these little holes.
After that a few surface rust patches were cleaned and treated in the boot. The door step and A-post repairs were stripped and etch primed like the rest of the weld repairs; I hadn't thought much of protecting them as I thought I'd have all the welding done within a few weeks...
But oh, whats that at the front end!
Wings! Just sat in place with a fibreglass bonnet picked up second hand. Next job is to sort out the front end.
